Shalom Chaverim (Hello friends) and welcome to Frances Kleiner’s web site of Jewish, and particularly Yiddish music. Her first CD/cassette for commercial distribution, Fran Kleiner-A Fire Glows: Yiddish Songs, Live At the Mermaid Inn is now available! You can listen to selected clips and order the CD and/or cassette on this site. There are few singers that can get an audience to immediately join them in singing from the first chord played. There’s the immediate smile when she starts to play the guitar and sing, combined with the melodic voice and impeccable Yiddish pronunciation that transmits her love of the music to the audience. She establishes a rapport and contact with the people, be they young children or older adults through her easy going and natural manner. Since she always includes the meaning of the song and its historical and cultural context, significance and symbolism, youngsters, as well as others, learn history while learning to sing a Yiddish song. For older adults, the moment they hear the sound of an old Yiddish song it evokes memories of childhood and tears may come to their eyes. When Fran has performed at nursing homes, even the frail residents light up and start tapping their feet at the recognition of a song from the past. At 80, her voice is still captivating audiences.
